4. West Point, 106.0 points

The No. 21 University of Oklahoma wrestling team secured its 16th straight Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational title Saturday with 173.5 total points as three of its wrestlers won individual championships. The tournament was held in the Special Events Recreation Center in Brockport, N.Y.

OU, who served as co-host for the event with Brockport, is the only team to ever take home the tournament title. Lock Haven took second with 154.0 points, Kent State placed third with 120.0 and West Point was fourth with 106.0. Buffalo (103.0), Bloomsburg (50.0) and Brockport (21.5) rounded out the standings.

Individually, Cody Brewer (133), Justin DeAngelis (157) and Zach Merrill (heavyweight) placed first in their respective weight classes.

On the day, Brewer won by fall, 19-3 technical fall and 17-6 major decision to secure a spot in the championship bout. There, the redshirt junior tallied an 11-2 major decision against Kent State’s Mackenzie McGuire to take his third straight championship in the event. For his performance, Brewer was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Redshirt senior DeAngelis registered three tech falls to start day (with scores of 19-3, 24-7 and 18-1) then beat Russell Parsons of West Point by decision, 11-5, to take his second straight title at the event.

OU took the top three spots at heavyweight, and the championship match pitted two Sooners against each other in redshirt senior Zach Merrill and senior Mike Brown. The match went into overtime before Merrill won by decision, 2-1.

Along with Brown, three other Sooners grabbed runner-up finishes in freshman Ryan Millhof (125), redshirt sophomore Clark Glass (165) and sophomore Greg Wilson (184).

Redshirt sophomore Ross Larson third took third at heavyweight and won the tournament’s Aggregate Pin Award after recording three falls in a total time of 5:48. Other Sooners who placed in third were redshirt freshman Shayne Tucker (149), redshirt sophomore Matt Reed (174) and redshirt sophomore Brad Johnson (197).

Finishing in fifth place were redshirt freshman Sean Williams (125), freshman Trae Blackwell (141) and freshman Brooks Climmons (184).

Redshirt junior Dalton Dennis took sixth at 141 pounds, while redshirt freshman Jon Wayne Townsend took eighth in the weight class. Townsend also took the Fastest Pin Award after recording a fall in 0:11.

Also competing for the Sooners were sophomore Jacob Sturges (133), freshman Josh McDermett (141), redshirt sophomore Dryden Dennis (149), junior Alec Iacovelli (165), redshirt sophomore Garrison McCauley (174) and freshman Cale Wilson (174).

Fourth-year head coach Mark Cody said that although he is glad his squad won, there is still a lot of work to do.

“I’ve told this young team several times that live wrestling in the room is much different than competition, and I am glad they got to see that firsthand,” Cody said. “We are coming away from this event with a good sense of where we are at to this point.”

The Sooners will return to the mat on Saturday, Nov. 22, as they travel to Ithaca, N.Y., to face No. 3 Cornell at 5:30 p.m. CT.
