NYSPHSAA approved the establishment of a 2 Division team state championship effective Jan 2018

Sounds great! Post season? I'm wondering when and where it will take place. If it is up for bid, I would like to see it in Rochester or Syracuse.

As the NYS Tournament is Week #34 on NYS Calendar and Sectionals are Week # 32, the last weekend in January (weekend prior to Divisionals) NYS Week #30 is the week selected to run the tournament. (With Snow date of Sunday).

Number of Divisions for the Tournament:
A separate bracket will be run for D1 and D2

Number of teams:
Each Division will be of a 12-team event with 4 pools of 3 teams (with each team being guaranteed two duals in their pools), with the pool champs advancing to a Championship Semifinal &,Final (possible 2 more duals)

Number of days for the tournament:
The tournament will a one-day event. The one-day format should work best and will be easier and cheaper to run.

Selection of the 12 Teams:
Each Section has the right to determine their team representative in whatever manner they deem acceptable. (Most will run Sectional Dual meet tournaments, while some will just select a team in each division to represent them). Sections do not have to enter a team if they choose not to.

The NYSWC feels that at this point in time it would be best not to include the Federation in the NYS Dual Meet Tournament. Without the CHSAA and PSAL this opens up 2-At-Large entries in D1 and 1-At-Large Entry in D2. Additional At-Large entries could be possible if a Section does not want to send a representative.
Division One: One entry per section: Sections 1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9,10,11, and 2 At-Large entries
Division Two: One entry per section: Sections 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11, and 1 At-Large entry

Possible sites for the tournament:
Joe Altieri-RFP (Request For Proposal) process would be used to determine who the site is awarded to. Finances, opportunity to compete in high-level venue, hotels, etc. are all considered. NYSPHSAA will ask NYSWC for recommendations of items to be included in the RFP.
-RFP process cannot begin until approval by the Executive meeting at the October 2016 meeting. Site bidding will be due by the January 2017 NYSWC meeting.
-One of main criteria should be to find a site that will draw highest attendance.
-A College Fieldhouse is preferred as they can get chairs on the floor in between the mats (for teams competing) vs an ice rink which cannot.

This sounds like great event and much needed. No more coulda, woulda, shoulda!

The only problem is making weight for an event that doesn't count for anything and risk injury for scholarship athletes . How about a 5 lb allowance on all weight classes to help assure a full line up?!

It will be held the last week of Jan so weight should not be a factor.

I feel that the winner of each sections dual meet championship should go. Too bad there are only 2 wild cards though.

Only one real problem I see - is the date. If the AD and varsity coach of any program have a heavy schedule then this event could put them over the allotted points for the season. If that's the case then teams may not have a full lineup to compete. Eastern States is one event that comes to mind. Wrestlers not full teams compete.

From the 16-17 program
Section Tournaments
Sectional Individual Tournaments and Sectional dual meet tournaments are not considered part of the regular season and do not count as points towards the maximum number of points permitted.
