Is it Murphy? What did he finish with? 290 or so?

Also, anyone have a link to a list by section or just the top 5-10 list of winners?

According to the 2013 NYSPHSAA State Championship Program

1) Cody Ruggirello, Valley Central, 275
2) Kenneth Betts, Fredonia, 269
3) Winky Shepard, Center Square, 267
4) Chris Nevinger, Letchworth, 260
5) Brian Benton, Amsterdam, 253
6) Michael Nevinger, Letchworth, 253
7) Kevin Smith, Mexico, 245
8) Taylor Malone, Lowville, 245
9) Terry Showalter, Canastota, 223

Obviously people are not listed on here that should be. I believe a few active wrestlers may have or will reach top ten this year.

Lets start a list of active wrestlers with the most all-time wins. Who will make the list?

Murphy, who finishes the season at 59-0 and with a state record total of """302""" career victories, decisioned Anthony Finnocchiaro of Canastota 7-3 in his 138 lb. title bout. - See more at: http://www.journal-register.com/localsports/x843246022/Holleys-Murphy-claims-fourth-crown#sthash.SbkDP7Os.dpuf

What about the Meys brothers? Seems like one of them got past Benton 's 253 in Section 2?

It's getting s little ridiculous at this level though, isn't it? I thought that Jeff Prescott was the best I ever saw out of Section 6, although I missed several years after that. Prescott would have nowhere near that number of wins.

I agree that it is very hard to compare across era's but we have had 7th graders on Varsity for some time now. With the 'event points' and 2 day tourney limits the playing field in terms of match counts is somewhat even. The major programs with most studs who make a run toward a state title are almost getting 48-56 HS matches per year.

There certainly are no slouches on these lists and if anyone is in the hunt for 275-300 as I believe a couple (including Amsterdam's Lapi) are.. it surely is worth watching.

Speaking of using stats to try and quantify wrestlers, I would be inclined to use winning percentage as
being more indicative of a wrestlers place on a list of greats instead of just wins.

Jessie Jantzen had only 3 loses in his 6 years of wrestling varsity which is pretty amazing.

I agree that win percentage is a better measure then looking at just wins to quantify wrestlers with statistics.
It appears the reason that Results Matters started this is to have an updated Total Wins List for New York State. The current one is outdated and lacking many wrestlers.

It would also be great if NYSPHSAA would keep a record of total win percentage.
Going forward, It appears NWCA Scorebook should have the capabilities to track each easily .
