in one of the other forums someone said it will help modified. heres why it wont. half of the schools are dropping modified because of budgets. so if you have a 88lb 9th grader your kid cant wrestle pee wee cause of age, to light for jv or varsity. if your school dumps modified. all the good young wrestlers will get no matches for maybe 2 years. I've heard the older generation say that the system is trying to eliminate wrestling they might end up that way if these weights go through. so the answer is rush your kids to BK McDs or taco bell to make weight. just what we need more over weight americans. LOL

What schools do you know that are dropping modified? Could you list the "half" that are doing so? School administrators threaten cuts all the time, not only in wrestling, but in other sports and in many academic areas, threatening to cut more teachers. Often, it is a ploy to get the teachers' union to make concessions (freeze raises, pay more health insurance, etc.) With sports, what the community members (parents of kids involved) need to do is to get on booster clubs, specific sports clubs, etc. and start fundraising or running events. It is out there and these clubs pick up the cost of funding sports teams (modified programs, uniforms, and much more). I don't remember hearing about too many (if any) modified wrestling programs that were cut. If so, people need to step up and do some work to keep them going, and build them up. Schools are not the best run businesses, but it may also be unrealistic to think that without community help and involvement programs can sustain themselves in the modern day, without seriously raising taxes.
It only takes a few thousand to fund a modified team's season, and it is not very hard to raise $3,000-$5,000. Go run a couple of spaghetti dinners at a local Elks club and you funded your kid's modified season.

91lbs gone, 96lbs gone, 105lbs gone, whats next? What is their answer to a kid that is actually under 100lbs and still in high school? Lets say a sophmore weighs 96lbs naturally and is forced to wrestle a kid that weighs 112lbs naturally but that kid drops down to the new weight class of 106llbs that is a 17% difference in from 112lbs and a 10.5% difference from 106lbs. So lets say we force a kid that weighs 145lbs to wrestle 10.5% above his weight that would be 160lbs which would be 2 weight classes above his. That's fair right?

I don't think the issue is about 7th and 8th grade kids wrestling varsity. If a kid in those grades is good enough to wrestle off and win a spot on varsity then good for him! The issue should be about the vast number of 9th-12th graders who have wrestled youth for many years and now find themselves out in the cold because there is no 96-98lb weight class. Wrestling is one of the very few sports where a kid can compete on a level playing field based on his or her ability and not based on their height and weight. You are always going to have athlete's cutting weight regardless of the lowest weight class available. However, by cutting out the 96-98lb class you are preventing those kids in high school who actually weigh 88-100 an opportunity to compete. In my opinion the 96lb weight class this past season was incredibly competitive and it would be a shame to see it eliminated.

My Son is 12 years old. He weights 67 lbs. He is an outstanding wrestler with a great attitude. I was hoping he could wrestle at 96 in 9th grade if that weight class is gone it won't give him a chance to compete at a high school level.

I was told by a very good source, they will have the weight class. If the follow the federation, They may move it the to 99lbs so there isn't a large gap to 106.

I heard similar opinions from coaches but it is up to the NYSPHAA to decide what is in the best interest of the state. IMO they will accept the new Federation weights; to ignore them and keep the current system would not be likely. I believe they will also create an "optional" weight of 100 lbs.. This was the case with 98 & 285 for years.
This would keep the number of classes at 15 and include the little guys, thus making everyone happy. We will know soon enough. The Executive committee is meeting May 6th & 7th. Hopefully someone will "leak" some information in the coming week.
