Here are some comments located at the online petition keep your opinions coming.

“ keep 96lb weight class. I have two sons both wrestled 96 in eighth, nineth And tenth. Don't give it up!!!!!!”

“i believe that you should save the 96 pound weight class due to all of the modified wrestlers coming up and some more that are staying down in that weight class this year all around the state”

“The state can not get rid the 96lbs weight class. Think about all those kids that will be sitting around not wrestling because there to lite to go up. Listen let the kids wrestle... “
“Why would you take away an opportunity for a young man to become a better wrestler and person. Thats the concept of student-athelete.”

“MK The middle school kids aren't just moved up... they have to go through a very difficult test... how many high schoolers can jump 7 feet from a standing position?...”

“ Many wrestlers who have gone through PeeWee programs are great athletes if they are forced to do modified, they could get bored and drop out... you'd be losing a lot ot talent and inspiration for others to join the sport. This sport doesn't get enough recognition as it is.... why make it less popular?”

“shouldnt be taken away because the gap of weight between 103 and 112 is not to small and that means we are going to have little kids wrestling at 103 and the same size kids wrestling 112”

“ Save the 96lbs class.....”

“You have to be kiding. I weighed only 89 pounds at the start of my Junior year! What do you want kids like that to do watch! Play basketball! Get your heads out of your butts!”

“I'm a 96 lb sophomore. Eliminating the weight class would be a big mistake. One great thing about wrestling is you wrestle kids your size, you eliminate that for the small kids when you take away 96”

“save 96lbs i have a son your will wrestle at this weight he is to small to wrestle in other weights”

“Enough with cutting corners in NY. Some kids are just small. NY is saying they have no right to compete because they are small. What sport would NY like them to play at 96 pounds? football? basketball? wrestling is where it is at for these kids.”
“My son is a 92 pound freshman. There is no guarentee that he will ever weigh over 96 pounds. Is it fair for him to alway be giving up over ten pounds? Keep 96, they aren't all junior high.”
“Enough with cutting corners in NY. Some kids are just small. NY is saying they have no right to compete because they are small. What sport would NY like them to play at 96 pounds? football? basketball? wrestling is where it is at for these kids.”

“ This idea contradicts what the state is trying to do with it's 2 division system, that is, get more students involved in wrestling along with more success. Eliminating this weight eliminates those potential wrestlers and potential successes. “

“I think if you take this weight class away you're taking away such great talent and potential of undeveloped 8th and 9th grade wrestlers

“Let the 96lber's wrestle duals and tourneys. It doesn't cost the schools any more money. This weight class helps give every kid in school a chance to participate, even if they are small. So what if many kids are Jr High. All varsity girls sports are filled with Jr High girls.”

“you need to keep that weight class i wrestled at it at one point in time and there is talent for the younger grade kids...not everyone is heavy..its giving the little guys a chance to compete”

“ I feel they are nuts if they do not keep the 96 lbs., My boys started in 7th grade in the 96 lb. class and it helped them come along to be good wrestlers. why hurt these young wrestlers and I feel it better to keep them off the streets.”

“Why should young athletes be discriminated against because they are small? The lower 91 lb. weight class has already been eliminated and most teams have no problem filling the 96 lb. weight class.”

“When I first became involved in this sport the lowest weight class was 90 or 91. There were always kids around in that class. Those kids are still around as underweight 96 pounders. What are they supposed to do if that class is dropped? Wrestling is a sport that is known for its ability to provide competition regardless of size. It's been a place where the short kid can compete in basketball or volleyball season, a place where the fat kid can compete against other fat kids, a place where the fine tuned athlete matches up against equally fine tuned athletes. Why cut these lightweights out of the action? Whose interest does that serve? And where are the colleges going to find future 125 pounders if NYS does this?”

MORE COMMENTS 26 Jan 2007:

"I believe the 96 lb weight class should be retained. Even though many 96lb wrestlers come from 7th and 8th grade there are still many 9th and 10th graders at that weight class. If NYS is concerned about being in compliance with other states than they should address the D1-D2 issue and others."

"Keep the weight class. It's a starting weight class for the smaller guys. It will hurt wrestling in general. How many guys start out in Pee Wee? As they grow they continue onj and move up in HS."

"The National Wrestling Classifications are attempting to allow greater participation by increasing the 275 pound class to 285, why would NYS eliminate opportunities at the other end of the spectrum? Let the little guys wrestle!"

"I am from section 4 but am mostly just a wrestling fan. I have been following high school wrestling since the mid 1970's I believe the 96 pound weight class is essential to the development of future high school stars"

"Some of the greatest wrestlers in NY State history have come from the 96 lb. weight class. Do not shut out the smaller kids. They deserve a chance just like
everyone else."

"I dont think its fair to end the 96 lb. class. Look back and see some 96 lb. 8th graders who have won sates. A good example would be Troy Nickerson. If he was unable to wrestle 96 i doubt he would have been a 5x champ. We have a good 7th grader who wrestles 96 and has ot gain weight to wrestle 96. I dont know of any older 96 pounders or any cutting weight. A better idea would be to dhange the upper weights so it didnt jump from 215-275"

"i think this is very important for smaller high school kids becouse not all kids in high school are over 100 pounds and it is important for them to get a fiar chance to win turnaments and matches and most of the 96 pounders are to small for 103"

"David LaNave please keep the 96 weight class,my 7th grader went from peewee's to varsity and took 2nd last year at states,he worked hard all his life competeing around the world and if he got stuck in modified it would have been a wasted season, thank you"

"bruce fisher what are you thinking, no do not get rid of the 96lbs. weight class.if anything add two more weight classes 90lbs. and 240lbs."

"Robert Bush Wrestling Coach - Ilion High School"

"Reid Sclafani There is no reason to eliminate an opportunity for smaller athletes to compete against student athletes their own size. Eliminating this weight class is just as discriminating as eliminating 275/285 and finishing with 215. Wrestling is one of the few sportws where a small athlete has a fair playing field."

" Brenda Lapi The purpose of high school sports is promote participation in order to develop social skills, self-esteem, and promote an active, healthy lifestyle. By eliminating the 96 lbs weight class, an entire group of young men and women might not have an opportunity to participate in wrestling."

Come on give me break.Anyone in highschool that says they arent big enough to wrestle 103 better hit the weight room. The highschool kids that are wrestling 96 are more than likely sucking alot of weight to get there because they would rather wrestle 7 and 8 graders than get whipped by someone their own age and maturity level.I dont care whether they have it or not I,m just saying that ,that is a bu@###t arguement to keep it.

A few names that come to mind when I think of the 96 pound weight class and the state championships (even more when you include sections).

Troy Forte 1998
Ryan Needle 1999
Trevor Chinn 1999
Troy Nickerson 2001
J.P. 0'Connor 2002/2003
Lou Ruggirello 2003
Nick Price 2003
Cory Jantzen 2004
Dylan DaBolt 2004
Ian Paddock 2005
Matt Metzler 2005

These are a few of the 96 pound wrestlers in the past few years. I only selected the names that have become a house hold name in sec. V, NY, (as well as with some) the NCAA!

I only spent a moment to jot down a few names. I could not recall is Gregor started at 96 or 103 and my goal was only to show that many top contenders started at the light weight.

Now for the other side of the issue. I can see how people can say that the class is to heavily relying on middle school wrestlers and that we should not keep a weight class just for these athletes that (if any other sport) would be competing mod. or JV. I understand that many programs dont provide good competition at the JV and Mod. level so their is no where for a good light weight to compete.

However I have noticed many programs that pull up middle school wrestlers just to fill the weight. Wrestlers that are not ready for varsity and as a result the wrestlers lose interest in the sport. When a wrestler comes out for the sport just b.c they want to be part of a varsity sport (in middle school) there is a problem. The sport should be the draw and the individual should be developed and not used.

Now if the Mod. and JV programs are not going to improve I think we leave no option but to keep 96. It is hard to cut something once people have become use to it. For all of those SR's who wrestle 96 I think it would be accurate to say that these wrestlers cut weight and that even if they are amazing, they will not be able to compete at the college level (since they start at 125). So based on this I would think that if we keep it we keep it for the younger wrestlers, not for the upperclassmen.

"Tim Boda I was a six year varsity wrestler and wrestled at the 91lbs class thru my 10th grade year never once over 100lbs I would have never been able to wrestle with out the light class untill I was a junior I probably would have lost intrest in the sport instead I wrestled and even placed 5th in the world championships in 2006 So with out the light class I never would have wrestled in school what a waste it would have been"

Jamie Carpenter was a senior at 96 pounds... try telling that kid he would have had to wrestle off dabolt for 103. Some kids just aren't big enough for 103.

400 William Ellinger Wrestling is a sport that any individual regardless of body size can excel at. Many have seen the great results of having the 96lb. weight class. This year alone we have 4 wrestlers who compete in the 96lb. weight class. All these athelets now have the chance to be part of a team, that without the weight class they would not have enjoyed. They also will be able to grow into higher weight classes and continue to help the team. It would be a mistake to eliminate this weight class!
