The Midlakes Duals hosted the state's (div 2) #2 Adirondack and #8 Phoenix (per Dec 31 list). Undefeated was Penfield beating Phoenix 34-28 after beating Adirondack 45-21 in the prelims. Brighton finished third with only one loss. It's incredible the level of wrestling in section V when teams that are not considered the top teams in our section can go to other sections in the state and beat their top teams.

Both Ad and Phoenix are overrated. Not to take anything away from Penfield, but these are 2 D2 schools as well. Getting back to Penfield.....probably the fastest improving program in the section. They will be right in the mix w/ the other elites very soon.
Phoenix wrestles Fulton this week....the score of that match should give us some indication where Penfield stands.
Please don't take this the wrong way....Penfield is tough as nails and getting tougher.

I certainly wouldn't say Phoenix is overrated. I am pretty sure you could see that they were missing 2 starters from their line up and gave up a forfiet at 103 or 96 and have a very young team 7th grader at 152 and 4 freshmen. Penfield is a tough team no doubt about it but it came down to the last bout with Phoenix giving up 2 forfiets. Brighton is out of this world considering they were giving up at least 4 forfiets. Phoenix will be no match for Fulton.

brighton wrestled tough against attica in the cross over winning the match 34-29 attica could have won the match if they had their 112 pounder not get majored and have their 103 lb not get pinned the match would be even closer same with penfeild attica could have beat penfeild they just didnt have the chips fall the way they wanted

Section V really showed up this past weekend. U-E, Midlakes, Liverpool, Ilion/Sammon, Bradshaw all had V teams at the top with several other V teams finishing strong. Spencerport earns #1. Rush-Henrietta gets well-deserved #16 on sportwriters D1 poll. Holley probably deserves higher than #11 on D2. Penfield deserves to be on there somewhere. Good show.

Attica did a great job against Adirondack and deservedly went from the honorable mention list to 9th. If they wreslted Penfield again, the chips wouldn't fall their way enough to cover the 15 point score difference.

Phoenix may have a young team with a 7th grader @ 152 and he did a good job not giving up a pin, if I remember correctly. Penfield had an 8th grader in the lineup and he did the same. Jr. High kids on Varsity is not an excuse if they are the best kid the school has for the spot. Phoenix moved up in the rankings.

RH moved up in the state rankings by beating Penfield. Holley should have moved up higher after beating D1 Watertown. Penfield should have moved into the top 20 after the Midlakes wins.

My point...Team Rankings are only educated guesses and opinions. The only one that really means anything is when the season is over and the dust settles. Section 5 is going to be well represented. The same goes for individual rankings--its who is on the medal stands at States that count.

There was an incredible level of wrestling at the Midlakes Duals. I was talking to 2 refs before the meet and they thought it was going to be a great level of wrestling (refs are fans, too). They were right.
