ITHACA -- Troy Nickerson's quest for his first NCAA wrestling title will have to wait another year.
Nickerson, a Cornell junior, will miss the 2007-08 season due to an injured shoulder.
An MRI on Nickerson's left shoulder was taken Thursday, and the results indicated a torn labrum in the shoulder. He will likely have surgery on the shoulder after Thanksgiving.
A Chenango Forks High graduate, Nickerson is the only five-time state champion in New York high school wrestling. The two-time NCAA Division I All-American was an NCAA runner-up his freshman year and a third-place finisher last season in the 125-pound weight class.
"It really stinks," Nickerson said. "I've been struggling with this shoulder injury for awhile now. I've tried to train through it and I have been getting ready for this season.
"As of Monday I was still planning on wrestling, but it got to the point where it got unbearable."
Nickerson is unsure of his immediate plans. A medical redshirt -- which would leave Nickerson with two years of collegiate eligibility remaining -- could be a possibility, but Nickerson acknowledged he hadn't discussed that scenario with anybody yet.
Right now, Nickerson's chief concern was getting healthy.
"It's going to take some time," Nickerson said. "I'm looking forward to getting my shoulder taken care of and getting back on the mats.
Nickerson's not the only notable absence from the Cornell wrestling team's lineup heading into its season opener against ninth-ranked Wisconsin tonight at Newman Arena.
Also out due to a shoulder injury is All-American Josh Arnone (184/197 pounds).
"It hurts us, obviously," said Cornell coach Rob Koll, whose team enters the 2007-08 season ranked No. 4 by W.I.N. Magazine. "Not having two All-Americans, that hurts."
