Let’s turn our attention to high school wrestling.
Last Wednesday evening, there were 11 wrestling matches throughout the Big 30.
In total, there were 72 forfeit wins, including a handful of double forfeits.
Schools have to pay bus drivers overtime.
They have to pay for officials.
To me, if a team can’t field at least 10 wrestlers, it should compete in tournaments only.
If school districts are serious about saving money, they should look into that option.

With Roof, no argument. But, at what point do you take some sort of action? If a team consisted of 1 guy, would that justify the cost of officials, a district vehicle, etc? I think they'd do better to work on their recruiting and improve their numbers, but the reality is that some of these schools have woeful programs and the wrestling community should be thankful that those districts don't just drop the programs. In the short term, however, simple pragmatism has to kick in at some point.

You know, a lot of the smaller schools have fluctuations in team size from year to year, not just in wrestling but every sport. Two years ago, we had 9 kids sign up for varsity baseball. They dropped the team. This year, they had 15 kids sign up for it, so they brought it back.
Hell, didn't Olean have barely 5 kids a couple of years ago? Now they have almost a full squad.
One more thing to consider, here in Salamanca, we usually lose 2 to 3 kids per match because of grades. These kids have to do their own part in keeping up with their school work and help their team.
